Guided By Voices have still got it. The unstoppable rock band is releasing their 42nd album Thick, Rich And Delicious on Halloween, and they shared “(You Can’t Go Back To) Oxford Talawanda” last month. Now they’re shredding on the new single “Phantasmagoric Upstarts.”

So far Casey Dienel (fka White Hinterland) has shared “Seventeen” and “Your Girl’s Upstairs” from their upcoming album My Heart Is An Outlaw, and both serve as lovely previews. Now the Massachusetts artist is unveiling two new singles called “People Can Change” and “The Butcher Is My Friend.”

In March, Twin Shadow commemorated his late father with the album Georgie. Now, the Dominican-American musician is already announcing its followup, Cadet, arriving next month.

We haven’t heard from Loma Prieta since their 2023 album Last. It turns out the Bay Area post-hardcore crew has been cooking up a side-project called Novacaine in the meantime, and their debut song “Milk” is out today.

We are always hyped for new music from Split System, the ace garage-punk unit from Melbourne. Today, it’s once again time for that enthusiasm to flow. The band has returned with what’s billed as their third and final 7″ of the year, boasting two extremely pointed new tracks. The A-side, “No Cops In Heaven,” is built for moments of howl-along barroom transcendence, while “Pull The Trigger” is more of a blunt force object, albeit one that moves swiftly and with purpose.

It’s a pretty baller move to form a band, name it after yourself, and then decide you also want to do a solo project that doesn’t use your name. That’s the María Zardoya way.

If you were sporting some severe side bangs in the late 2000s, then you’re likely aware of Paramore’s history of dramatic lineup changes. You’ve also likely seen Jennifer’s Body, the 2009 horror-comedy feminist masterpiece in which Megan Fox plays a high school cheerleader who becomes possessed by the devil and starts cannibalizing her male classmates. Its soundtrack was released by Fueled By Ramen, the same label that put out the first few Paramore albums, and it features a ton of emo/pop-punk heavyweights from the era like Panic! At The Disco, All Time Low, and Dashboard Confessional. Hayley Williams even contributed an original song called “Teenagers” for Jennifer’s Body, but notably, none of her Paramore bandmates were involved with it. It turns out that’s because one of Williams’ bandmates at the time didn’t want anything to do with Jennifer’s Body.

Friendship’s stark, somber, slyly funny Caveman Wakes Up is one of this year’s truly great indie rock achievements, and “Free Association” is one of its finest tracks. Today the Philadelphia band has reminded us of all that with the release of a new remix EP.

The Replacements lived out one of the most entertaining, heartbreaking stories in rock history, and author Bob Mehr told that story brilliantly in the 2016 biography Trouble Boys. Now Finn Wolfhard is bringing that story to the big screen.

Perhaps nothing illustrates Fucked Up’s wild-eyed ambition better than their series of Zodiac singles. For 19 years, the great Toronto rockers have released a progression of long, twisty, genre-exploding records, each of them corresponding to a different year of the Chinese Zodiac calendar. The first one was the Year Of The Dog 12″ in 2006, and the most recent is Year Of The Horse, an epic four-part double 12″ that came out in 2021. Now, Fucked Up are ready to conclude that saga with a ten-part finale called Grass Can Move Stones, which will include the band’s final three entries, Goat, Monkey, and Rooster.

As a baby, Spencer Elden appeared on the cover of Nirvana’s Nevermind: floating in a pool, completely naked, grasping for a dollar on a fishhook. It’s one of the most iconic album covers ever, and Elden dined out off it for years. But in 2021, Elden sued Nirvana, claiming the image was child pornography. The case was dismissed in January 2022, then dismissed again in September 2022. An appeals court revived the suit in December 2023, and now the legal system has once again come to the same conclusion.

A lot of folks over here in the English-speaking world were introduced to Bb trickz almost exactly a year ago when Charli XCX enlisted her for the star-studded Brat remix album. Since then, the Spanish rapper has infiltrated American audiences by teaming up with Ice Spice on her recent remix album, and by paying tribute to Clairo on the single “not a pretty girl.” Today, Bb trickz returns with the surprise-released EP called lechita.

When I saw Show Me The Body headline a great touring bill in Richmond last year, they covered motherfucking “Sabotage.” I was unprepared for this, and it fucking ruled. Turns out that Show Me The Body have been covering the Beastie Boys’ 1994 anthem since 2023, when they debuted their version at a surprise Tompkins Square Park show. The original song obviously rules, and Show Me The Body exist within that track’s universe of attitude-forward New York rock ‘n’ roll. Now, SMTB have shared the studio version of their “Sabotage” cover.

Ellis Dickson, the drummer from proggy weirdos Fat Dog, has his own solo project called ELLiS·D. Today, he’s released a new single “I Want To Be Everything You Desire.” It’s the first single that he’s released since dropping his EP Spill this past April.

The band is called Guitar. That’s what Saia Kuli decided to name his Portland indie rock project. It’s just fucking crazy. We probably make too much of that decision when we write about Guitar on this website, but we’re not the ones who decided to name the band Guitar. Truth in advertising, though — there is a whole lot of guitar in Guitar’s music. You can hear a great deal of it on the new song “Chance To Win.”

The ridiculously fun LA pop-punk trio Suzie True will release their new album How I Learned To Love What’s Gone in a few weeks, and you should be fired up about that. Suzie True recorded the LP with producer Chris Farren, while Eve 6’s Jon Siebels recorded and mixed it. We’ve posted the early tracks “LEECHES (PLAY DEAD!)” and “Get Prettier Overnight!!!” Today, they’ve got a new song that doesn’t have any exclamation points in its title. I guess you could say the exclamation point is implied.

Atlanta’s Upchuck will share their new Ty Segall-produced album I’m Nice Now this Friday, and judging by the singles we’ve heard so far, it’s shaping up to be a good one. They’ve shared one final advance track today called “New Case.”

In a couple of weeks, Helen Ballentine’s hazy-reverie project Skullcrusher will follow 2022’s Quiet The Room with the new album And Your Song Is Like A Circle. We’ve already posted her songs “Exhale,” “March,” and “Dragon.” Now, just before the LP drops, she’s dropped another sad-lullaby bomb on us. This one is called “Living.” L-I-V-I-N, man.

Earlier this year, Circuit Des Yeux unveiled the extravagant album Halo On The Inside. Now the art-pop musician is back with an expanded edition called Halo On The Inside: Director’s Cut.

You probably don’t need me to tell you this, but you should really go see Nine Inch Nails live. Earlier this year, Trent Reznor’s long-running band headed out on their first proper tour in a few years, and it was fucking incredible. I saw the show in Baltimore, and that shit blew my wig back. Reznor and his stripped-down band have enlisted the best sound and light people that you could possibly imagine, and they have constructed a spectacle that allows them to dig into the nooks and crannies of NIN history and to play around with iconic tracks while still bringing the full-force anthems that launched a million high-school image reinventions. Last month, NIN finished their tour in Los Angeles and released their Tron: Ares soundtrack. If you missed the tour, you now have another chance. They’re bringing it back next year.

Agriculture are about to drop one of the greatest albums of 2025. The Los Angeles ecstatic black metal quartet already outlined the manifold influences for The Spiritual Sound in these very pages. Now, with that brilliantly bracing collection just days from release, the band has shared one last advance single.

Austin-based independent label Western Vinyl has announced a new charity compilation called Passages: Artists In Solidarity With Immigrants Refugees, And Asylum Seekers. Alan Sparkhawk’s contribution “No More Darkness” is out today, along with Benjamin Booker’s “A Place For Us.”

HighSchool, the duo of ridiculously handsome Australians Rory Trobbiani and Luke Scott, will release their self-titled full-length debut on Halloween. We’ve posted their single “Dipped,” and now they’ve jumped headlong into teenage melodrama on their new single “Sony Ericsson,” both with song and video.

In a couple of months, Carlyn Bezic, the Toronto musician who records as Jane Inc., will release A Rupture A Canyon A Birth, a new album partly inspired by the moment that a semi truck plowed into Belzic’s broken-down tour van. Nobody in the Jane Inc. touring party was hurt in that accident, and they even played their scheduled show later that night. But everyone could’ve easily been killed, and that kind of near-death experience will do something to you. That’s the key to Jane Inc.’s new song “what if.”

If I was still writing my monthly hardcore column, the rise of Haywire would’ve been a big topic. The Boston band plays an extremely hooky and fun form of down-the-middle fastball hardcore. There’s nothing revolutionary about their music, but they are out there working harder than any other band, and that work is getting results. Haywire have one album and a couple of EPs to their name, and they tour like fucking demons, playing tiny DIY spaces all over this country. They’ recently plaued both Alaska and Hawaii. Tonight, they’ll play at the Apostolic Life Cathedral in Huntington, West Virginia. With that show, they will have played in all 50 states within one calendar year. Social-media clips of Haywire shows have been all over my feed for months — none more so than when they covered Title Fight in Wilkes-Barre last night.

Now, the trendy New York artist is getting ready to open for Lorde on some of her Ultrasound Tour dates and Grizzly Bear at some of their reunion shows, but first he’s sharing a transcendent new track called “The Coward Forgets His Nightmare.”

Over the weekend, the War & Treaty were initially slated to play a charity event for a nonprofit company called Equestrian Connection, and instead ended up joining Zach Bryan for “Hey Driver” at his Michigan Stadium concert, which broke the record for the highest-attended ticketed concert in America. After receiving public backlash from Equestrian Connection, the duo has made a statement about their decision.

After news broke this past spring that Donald Trump had finagled his way into a chairman job at the Kennedy Center, a fleet of artists including Rhiannon Giddons, Issa Rae, and a touring Hamilton production all canceled their previously-scheduled performances there in protest of his crackdown on “wokeness.”

London-based group Whitelands are releasing their sophomore album Sunlight Echoes, the follow-up to last year’s Night-bound Eyes Are Blind To The Day, at the beginning of next year. Alongside the announcement comes a shimmering indie-pop single “Glance,” which comes with a music video starring actors David Jonsson (The Long Walk, Alien: Romulus, Industry) and Honor Swinton Byrne (daughter of Tilda Swinton and John Byrne; starred in The Souvenir films).

When not hopping onstage to sing “West Coast” with a random indie band while out for ice cream, Lana Del Rey has been busy with the kind of online drama that has been a more or less constant subplot throughout her career.

Imagine starting a new creative endeavor and then being mentored by your heroes right off the bat. This was pretty much the case for Rocket, the Los Angeles quartet of 20-somethings who began making amped-up guitar music together in 2021. In the two years between their formation and their debut EP Versions Of You, Rocket started regularly playing local gigs, sharing bills with their friends in bands like Milly and the now-defunct Regrettes. Before long, Rocket were opening for some of the very same bands they’d grown up worshipping: Sunny Day Real Estate, Ride, Smashing Pumpkins. They hadn’t even put out a full-length album yet.

My Morning Jacket’s Z turns 20 this Saturday, and the band is ready for the occasion. Last month the band announced a 20th anniversary deluxe reissue of the album with a remaster of the original tracklist plus demos, outtakes, and unreleased tracks. One of those shelved songs has made its way online today ahead of the reissue’s release this Friday.

The music-business whirlwind that accompanied the success of breakout hit “Messy” has seemed to take its toll on Lola Young. The UK singer, who released her new album I’m Only Fucking Myself this month, fainted onstage Saturday during her performance at the All Things Go festival at New York’s Forest Hills Stadium. A few days earlier, she pulled out of Audacy’s We Can Survive Concert in Newark, citing mental health concerns. She also vomited during her debut Coachella performance back in April, explaining later, “I was nervous, guys.” Now, she has announced that she’s taking an unplanned break.

The Mariah Carey grunge album is not just a fantasy. Since Carey first revealed its existence in 2020 via her memoir The Meaning Of Mariah Carey, the 1995 LP Someone’s Ugly Daughter — recorded under the band name Chick, with Carey’s vocals relegated to the background — has become something of a mysterious musical relic. Last fall, she revealed on a podcast that she was searching for a version with her vocals intact in order to release it. It was unclear when and if that would ever happen, but now it’s seems close at hand.

The business entities controlling the collected works of glam god Marc Bolan have not exactly been averse to compilations, reissues, and box sets, but somehow there’s still a T. Rex song that had never been released before today. “I’m Dazed” is out now, on what would have been Bolan’s 78th birthday, to go along with another commemoration effort: English Heritage have unveiled a blue plaque at Bolan’s former London home at 31 Clarendon Gardens, Maida Vale.

REO Speedwagon weren’t gone for long. Almost exactly one year ago, the classic rock institution announced their breakup, citing “irreconcilable differences” between frontman Kevin Cronin and bassist Bruce Hall. Neither of those guys were original members of REO Speedwagon, who formed in Champaign, Illinois in 1966, but both of them had been in the band for decades. The band played their farewell shows in December of last year, and Cronin said that the breakup was not his idea. Cronin was publicly upset when a bunch of his bandmates announced plans for a hometown Champaign show earlier this year. This past weekend, however, Cronin was back with his old bandmates, playing the halftime show for the University Of Illinois’ homecoming game against USC.
